3pm – City Riots (Adelaide, Australia)

http://www.cityriots.com/

Having graced the stages of major festivals such as Big Day Out, Soundwave, SXSW, and Filter’s Culture Collide, City Riots, a four-piece hailing from Adelaide, Australia will surely kick off Big Noyes CMJ 2010 in proper form. In late 2008, City Riots’ self-released Socialize EP earned the band a nomination for Australia’s Triple J Unearthed Artist of the Year award. NME declared the band to be “…kind of like a cranky, street-smart Bravery, only good. They do something really special and start to stand out from the thousand skinny-jeaned garage bands that have come before them.” They recently recorded their debut full-length with famed producer Bjorn Throrsrud (Smashing Pumpkins, The Dandy Warhols), and were handpicked by none other than Billy Corgan to headline the Smashing Pumpkins national Australian tour in October 2010.

4pm – Battle Circus (Auckland, New Zealand)

http://www.battlecircus.com/

Although based in Auckland and having toured New Zealand relentlessly for years, Battle Circus has always had one foot in and one foot out of the country. The frequency and variety of their international jaunts abroad have garnered the group a diverse and widespread international following, opening for the likes of Amanda Palmer, Karnivool, The Red Paintings and many others during their travels. For the past two years, most of this touring has been on the back of the band’s debut record, a spellbinding concept-driven EP titled The Half-Light Symphony. Fusing ferocious guitars, soaring piano, intricate rhythms, stirring string arrangements and eerie subterranean soundscapes, this dark, theatrical creation led HBO to request parts of The Half-Light Symphony to promote the launch of their vampire series “True Blood.” Bloggers across the globe quickly heralded Battle Circus as mandatory listening, leading print outlets and radio stations worldwide to embrace the band. We can’t wait to see what they have in store for CMJ.

5pm – Street Chant (Auckland, New Zealand)

http://www.streetchant.com/

Street Chant - Scream Walk.mp3

Street Chant - Yr Philosophy.mp3

With brash confidence and a reputation for killer live performances, Street Chant are poised to take NYC by storm during CMJ week, and we’re beyond excited that they’ve agreed to play our show. Their long-awaited debut album Means was released this past August on Arch Hill, home to legendary act The Clean and fellow travelers Surf City. They were handpicked to play around Australia with The Dead Weather, watched every song they released top the b.Net charts, and recently took home the prestigious NZ Critics’ Choice prize amid strong competition. Fierce, passionate, and irreverent, Street Chant are not just another “buzz band” of the moment. Having worked relentlessly over the last four years to build a reputation and solid base of devotees, Street Chant have proven that they’ve got the talent to become a music success story in their native New Zealand and beyond.

6pm – Yellow Ostrich (New York, NY)

http://www.yellowostrich.com/

Yellow Ostrich - Mary.mp3

Yellow Ostrich - WHALE.mp3

Yellow Ostrich is Alex Schaaf. Originally from Wisconsin, Alex moved to New York City in the summer of 2010, recruited a drummer (Michael Tapper of We Are Scientists and Bishop Allen), and started releasing his music for free on Bandcamp. He creates lo-fi folk music that has been compared to Sufjan Stevens, Of Montreal, and Andrew Bird, among others. Yellow Ostrich have released 3 EPs, and their full-length debut The Mistress just launched this month. Charming and poetic, Yellow Ostrich’s songs translate incredibly well in a live setting.

7pm – MiniBoone (Brooklyn, NY)

http://www.miniboone.com/

MiniBoone - Devil In Your Eyes.mp3

MiniBoone - The Other Summer.mp3

What’s to say about MiniBoone that hasn’t already been said? With one of the best live shows around, it’s no wonder MSN.com voted the guys Best of CMJ 2009: "[The band's] tight interplay and graceful ability to share responsibility for carrying up-tempo beats and carefully balanced melodies made them shine as one of the best new acts at CMJ." Tipped by the L Magazine as one of the 8 NYC Bands You Need to Hear in 2010, MiniBoone’s frenetic, hook-laden songs call to mind Talking Heads, Animal Collective, and Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah. The Village Voice characterized the band’s sound as "An enchanting mesh of old-school energy and new-school melody. The band mixes the dervish energy of '78-era post-punk with the super-hooks of modern indie-pop--think Buildings And Food-era Talking Heads if David Byrne could travel back in time and tell himself about Arcade Fire." Um, awesome. Do yourself a favor and come check MiniBoone out before they blow the hell up.

8pm – New Madrid (Brooklyn, NY)

www.myspace.com/newmadridmusic

New Madrid - Soberano.mp3

Formed in 2009, New Madrid is a Brooklyn-based rock trio consisting of Axel Ito (vocals, drums), Anthony Formichella (bass), and Erik Barragan (guitar). Their sound fuses contemporary American and British Rock/Alternative with traditional rhythms found in the South American Andes, and embraces lyrics both in Spanish and English: un estilo engendrado en Latino America pero creado en Norte America.

In the past year, New Madrid's explosive live show garnered much public interest and college radio play, expanding their boundaries beyond New York and earning them an invitation to play the SXSW Music Festival in Texas in early 2010. In September of 2010 the trio teamed up with LA-based Ostrich Music Group, exposing their smash "Soberano" to the masses. Proud to represent the union of Spanish and English culture and language, New Madrid provides the soundtrack for bilingual rock worldwide. Una fusión, un nuevo lenguaje, una nueva canción unida; eso es New Madrid.

9pm – True Womanhood (Washington, DC)

http://www.truewomanhood.com/

True Womanhood - Dream Cargoes.mp3

True Womanhood bonded over a shared nostalgia for the songwriting craft of 1980's British groups such as the Smiths and Joy Division and an interest in the futuristic beats and sounds of modern day electronica, dubstep and hip hop. The trio's devotion to both these seemingly disparate poles has yielded songs that at once can be strident and melodic, experimental and addictive, a unique blend of textures intricately woven into cohesive pop songs. This skillful assembly is especially evident in its explosive live delivery, where True Womanhood make use of an ever evolving stage set up which has based itself around the likes of timpani, industrial blades, and antique drum machines and synths triggering new age electronics. Their debut EP, Basement Membranes, on the Baltimore label Environmental Aesthetics, was recorded mainly at the DIY venue and effects pedal factory Death By Audio in Brooklyn, before the finishing touches were applied with the help of J. Robbins (Jawbox) at his studio in Baltimore. It was released in 2010. The group's first full-length album, recorded and mixed by Robbins, is complete pending release.

In the short time they've been together, True Womanhood has had the opportunity to perform both in and outside of their home city with hip, national acts such as HEALTH; A Place to Bury Strangers; Titus Andronicus; The Antlers; Times New Viking; Beach Fossils; These Are Powers; Bear Hands; Crystal Antlers; Indian Jewelry; The Mae Shi; AIDS Wolf.

10pm – Voodo Fe (Brooklyn, NY)

http://www.voodofe.com/

Voodo Fé - Crazy.mp3

Voodo Fé - Street Party.mp3

Voodo Fé is an artist that brilliantly blends alternative rock and hip hop aesthetics into a brand of music that moves the body and stimulates the mind. The Brooklyn bred artist has been on the scene for nearly a decade, performing with such notable groups as The Dark Theory and Phoenix & The Shadow. Now solo, Voodo Fé is out to take the world by storm with his futuristic vision of alternative hip hop music. Incorporating raw lyrics, aggressive bass beats, bold guitar riffs, and Fe’s signature gritty vocals that fuse rhyming with the distinct sound of Haitian chanting, Voodo Fe’, asks you to feel, and dares you to act. Although his music draws from a diverse set of genres (hip hop, rock, kompa, and electronica, to name a few), his style is truly a breath of fresh air. A recipient of the ASCAP Plus Music Award and voted Best Live Alternative Hip Hop Band by the Village Voice, Voodo Fé’s is beloved by fans and critics alike. Accompanied by his highly skilled and dynamic backing band, Fé’s live performances are the stuff of legend – but don’t take our word for it, come see for yourself.

11pm –Nite Club (Brooklyn, NY)

http://www.niteclubmusic.com/

Nite Club - BK Nights.mp3

Nite Club - Left Right.mp3

Nite Club is the project of multi instrumentalist Richard Spitzer. Born into a Orthodox Jewish / Cuban family, music was a natural part of daily life, be it the salsa and mambo-infused family parties or the introspective soulful prayer at the ultra Orthodox Hebrew Temple. Diversity in music was Spitzer’s calling since he was little. At 16 years old, Spitzer started performing at rave events, and blossomed as a player with prog rock, punk and live drum n’ bass groups using modern classical composition as his backdrop. Spitzer then pursued a music education in college where he was composition classmates with electronic artist Dan Deacon. Spitzer has toured the US, Europe and Japan, opening for The Rapture, The Roots, Jamie Lidell, Lightning Bolt, DJ Oscar G, DJ DB, Kool Keith, and also performed at major international superclubs such as Crobar, Avalon, and Spirit.

Nite Club’s 2009 debut, Mytronic, received four out five stars from URB Magazine, who proclaimed: "With Spitzer’s knack for emotive melodies and nasty grooves, Nite Club proves that drum machines can indeed have some soul." Manipulating all kinds of instruments, Spitzer’s experiences come together with Nite Club. Beautiful synths meet timeless breaks and impassioned vocals to create an introspective listening experience somehow suitable for both solo listening and dancefloors. In the live setting, Nite Club becomes a collaboration with Osbourne (Ghostly International) drummer Steve Bryant. Their combined background of live jungle, indie rock and hip hop makes for an upbeat and dreamy atmosphere reminiscent of early 90’s UK rave scene. Sounds damn good to us.

BIG NOYES CMJ 2009

Saturday October 24 @ R Bar (218 Bowery at Prince)
8$ - free w/ CMJ badge

3pm - Oberhofer (Tacoma, WA/NYC)
4pm - MyNameIsJohnMichael (New Orleans, LA)
5pm - the johns (NYC)
6pm - Awesome New Republic (Miami, FL)
7pm - Dynasty Electric (NYC)
8pm - Bang Bang Eche (New Zealand)
9pm - Ninjasonik (NYC)

Oberhofer
(3pm)
myspace.com/oberhofermusic

At first listen to the lush, expansive, and rhapsodic sound of Brad Oberhofer’s work, one would never guess that he records as a solo artist. While Oberhofer is first and foremost a drummer and vocalist, the depth of his talent extends from the traditional to experimental instrumentation and production. Hailing from the Northwest, Oberhofer incorporates indie rock sensibilities (i.e. freak folk, noise pop, dance-punk) into a symphonic, bombastic sound, peppered with subtle electronics and upbeat dance rhythms, that is accessible and familiar, yet satisfyingly unclassifiable. One can expect only good things to come from this promising young artist.

MyNameIsJohnMichael (4pm)
mynameisjohnmichael.com / myspace.com/mynameisjohnmichael

In late 2007, John Michael Rouchell embarked upon an ambitious goal: to write, record, and release one song a week for the entire year of 2008 under the moniker ‘MyNameIsJohnMichael’ (MNIJM). Initially envisioned as a solo project, Rouchell tackled every instrument and performed engineering duties on his own. On word of his talent, however, MNIJM grew into a multi-instrumental six man spectacle with an ever-expanding following and a steady flow of fresh material. MNIJM explodes on stage with songs that OffBeat Magazine says "are split between dark, ambient ballads and Springsteen-inspired panoramic rockers." Conveying stories of isolation and triumph in the modern era, MNIJM wall of sound is a force to be reckoned with - Spin recently named the band one of the "25 Must Hear Artists from the CMJ Festival".

The johns (5pm)
thejohnsnyc.com / myspace.com/thejohnsnyc

NYC quartet The johns are hard at work in the studio with producer Jay Braun (Chuck D, Cat Power, The Stills) working on the full-length follow up to their 2007 hit debut The johns Wanna Dance. The band’s video for "Shake It", a NewNowNext favorite on LOGO, is still in regular rotation more than a year after its release. LOGO critic Julie Bolcer compared lead singer Johnny P's vocals to "...Joey Ramone with more dramatic flair... surrounded by a formula of mean guitar and rapid rhythms that could be described as white trash thrash." With their theatrical, dance-worthy knock-out shows and rock steady mix of disco, punk, electro, and pop, The johns are leading a punk rave revolution.

Awesome New Republic (6pm)
awesomenewrepublic.com / myspace.com/awesomenewrepublic

Miami’s Awesome New Republic will surely bring the heat with their “addictive if not maddening” (Stereogum) mix of guitar rock, soul, and crunk party beats. ANR is a 2-piece comprised of core members Michael John Hancock and Brian Robertson, who have been cultivating their sound in the “Magic City” for the past 5 years. ANR’s self-released “ANR So Far” to critical and popular acclaim in 2005, followed by Rational Geographic Volumes I and II, which were released as FREE downloads via the band’s website in the Spring of 2009. ANR has been featured in the New York Times and also has received licensing opportunities from CBS, VISA and Toyota. The band’s latest effort, Hearts, is set to drop October 27, 2009.

Dynasty Electric (7pm)
dynastyelectric.net / myspace.com/dynastyelectric

Dynasty Electric is Seth Misterka (guitar, sax, synth, vox) and Jenny DeVeau (vox, theremin), a NYC duo that weave thick bass lines, heavy beats, and raw sexual energy into a compelling and unique brand of psychedelic, futuristic funk. Seth is an accomplished saxophonist in jazz and indie circles who has played with Anthony Braxton, Brian Chase, Shy Child, and Hot Chip. The sultry Jenny, with her wild antics, extreme fashion sense and feverish stage presence, calls to mind a modern Iggy Pop. Beyond Race Magazine notes: “Dynasty Electric is a group that really can't be compared to any other. Their psychedelic pop/rock sound stands out from most bands with their futuristic beats and seductive vocals. If ’60s era psychedelic rock merged with futuristic experimental pop this is exactly how it would sound.” RIYL: Garbage, Blondie, The Sounds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Bang Bang Eche (8pm)
bangbangeche.com / myspace.com/bangbangeche

Most teenagers in an unsigned band will never get to do even a small fraction of what Bang Bang Eche has already done with just a self-released EP and combustible live performances. These young dance punks from Christchurch, New Zealand shame older bands with their frenetic live shows that have decimated parties in underground bunkers, warehouses and outdoor festivals around the globe. They've toured with !!!, The Faint, Die! Die! Die!, and Cut Off Your Hands, and have been featured on NME.com, Filter, and KEXP. Download their killer debut EP through their MySpace page. Look for the band’s follow up Sonic Death Cuntttt next month. Bang Bang Eche will be touring worldwide to support the EP starting with New York City’s CMJ Music Marathon in October.

Ninjasonik (9pm)
ninjasonik.com / myspace.com/ninjasonik

Ninjasonik is a Brooklyn-based musical collaboration created by Reverend McFly, Telli “Bathroomsexxx” Gramz and DJ Teenwolf. The group’s live shows are legendary – Urb Magazine, who named Ninjasonik one of the “Next 100” in their annual issue, warn: "If you have any political/social/personal space sensibilities prior to a Ninjasonik show, prepare to throw that shit out the window." The Ninjas have shared stages with Japanther, The Death Set, Spank Rock, Dan Deacon, The Cool Kids, Team Robespierre, and Ponytail, and recently toured with Matt & Kim. PopMontreal notes: "Ninjasonik are tha future. Jah Jah's the punk, Telli's the rapper, and Teenwolf keeps the beat spinning. Easy to love hard to hate (unless you're a hater), Ninjasonik come from a place of pure adulation for what they get to do and the good people they get to do it with!" Heed the Ninjas own words: “you aint gotta like us, but ya better learn to love us, cuz we the best thing goin!”
